D2655-23 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📜 Scope and Application Overview

ASTM D2655-23 governs the specification for crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation used in electrical wire and cable. This standard applies to conductor sizes 14 AWG (2.08 mm²) and larger, rated for voltages not exceeding 2000 V, and designed for continuous operation at a conductor temperature of 90 °C. The insulation is suitable for both wet and dry location power cable applications.

The base resin typically comprises polyethylene or a polyethylene copolymer. The standard provides essential test methods and requirements to ensure quality and reliability of the insulation material for its intended service environment.

⚠️ Important Exclusions: Unless specifically formulated with carbon black or an alternative UV-resistant additive system, the insulation covered by this standard is not inherently sunlight or weather resistant. Outdoor applications require a tailored formulation.

🧪 Physical Properties and Test Requirements

The physical property requirements for this crosslinked insulation are detailed in Table 1 of the standard. Key evaluations include unaged and aged tensile strength and elongation, heat distortion, percent hot creep, and percent hot set. The standard defines aging as exposure of the insulation to air at 121 °C for 168 hours. All tests are conducted on the insulation as applied to a conductor, strictly to assess the insulation material itself.
