D2616-19 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Scope and Summary of the Gray Scale Method

ASTM D2616-19 defines a standard test method for the visual evaluation of color differences of non-self-luminous specimens using a dedicated painted gray scale. This method is structured around a nine-pair gray scale historically derived from the AATCC Gray Scale for Color Change. It is specifically designed for evaluating small to moderate color differences, typically less than 15 CIELAB color difference units.

In summary, the test method requires an observer to compare two test specimens against a series of nine paired gray color chips. These chips feature progressively larger lightness differences. The color difference is evaluated by identifying which of the nine gray pairs visually matches the test pair, or through interpolation between pairs.

✅ Principle of Equivalence: The key innovation of this method is the fundamental assumption that a total chromatic and lightness difference between colored specimens can be reliably expressed in terms of an equivalent lightness difference on a neutral gray scale.

⚙️ Significance and Standard Testing Procedure

The significance of this test method lies in its ability to quantify perceived color differences. The total perceived color difference between two specimens is compared as an equivalent lightness difference. The gray scale itself is comprised of nine pairs of neutral gray color standards.

The defining architectural feature of the scale is that Reference Pair 5 contains two examples of the exact same gray. One element common to every other pair on the scale is this specific gray from Reference Pair 5. The other element in each pair is progressively lighter, creating a logical succession of lightness differences. The observer judges whether the total difference between the specimen pair is closest to one of the nine defined steps. The assigned result is expressed as a fractional, linear scale value between 1 and 5.
