D2570-24 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

🧪 Test Objectives and Significance

This test method evaluates the effect of a circulating engine coolant on metal test specimens and automotive cooling system components under controlled, essentially isothermal laboratory conditions.

It provides a better evaluation and selective screening of engine coolants than standard glassware testing (D1384). The improvement is achieved through controlled circulation, the use of actual automotive cooling system components, and a greater ratio of metal surface area to coolant volume.

⚙️ Test Apparatus and Procedure

The test employs a closed flow loop consisting of a metal reservoir (simulating an engine block), an automotive coolant pump, a radiator, and connecting rubber hoses meeting the SAE J20 standard. Key test parameters are detailed below.

🟦 Parameter📏 Specification
Test Duration1064 hours
Temperature190 °F (88 °C)
CirculationAutomotive coolant pump
Hose SpecSAE J20
Unit SystemFoot-Pound-Second (SI in parentheses)
Tip: This test serves as the crucial intermediary step between glassware screening (D1384) and full-scale dynamometer or field service testing, providing a highly repeatable laboratory simulation of service conditions.
