ASTM D2564 – 20 (Reapproved 2024) is the recognized specification for solvent cements used in rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) piping systems. It sets strict requirements for viscosity, bond strength, and dissolution to ensure reliable joints in plumbing and industrial applications.
This specification covers cements for PVC piping systems made from compounds defined in ASTM D1784. D2564 classifies cements into three viscosity grades to match specific pipe sizes and joint configurations:
| 🟦 Cement Type | 📐 Typical Pipe Size | 📏 Viscosity Range (cP) |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Body (Type P) | ≤ 2 inches (50 mm) | 90 – 250 |
| Medium Body (Type M) | 2 – 6 inches (50 – 150 mm) | 500 – 1,600 |
| Heavy Body (Type H) | > 6 inches (150 mm) | 1,600 – 5,500 |
Cements must pass rigorous mechanical tests for joint integrity, including lap shear and static shear strength under elevated temperatures. Viscosity stability and dissolution are validated per ASTM D1084 and Section 6 of the standard.
| 🟦 Property | 🎯 Requirement |
|---|---|
| Lap Shear Strength (73°F / 23°C) | 300 psi (2.07 MPa) minimum |
| Static Shear Strength (176°F / 80°C) | 100 psi (0.69 MPa) minimum for 1 hour |
| Degree of Dissolution | 100% complete, no graininess |
| Viscosity Stability | Must remain within grade limits |
