D2563-08 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

🛡️ Scope and Acceptance Criteria

This practice covers the acceptance criteria for visual inspection of molded glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) laminate parts, as designated under ASTM D2563-08 (Reapproved 2015). It provides standardized word descriptions of common visual defects and categorizes inspection requirements into distinct levels of product quality. The standard emphasizes that the allowable size and frequency of defects in the general categories are not linked to specific service requirements; a negotiated Level IV is reserved for custom performance needs.

Acceptance criteria in Section 2 require strict conformance to drawing dimensions and tolerances, with any nonconforming dimension serving as cause for rejection. All molded-in inserts, nuts, studs, and lugs must be free of damage and must not be coated with laminate material that impairs mechanical fit or function.

⚠️ Critical Area Designation: Per Section 2.6, areas critical to structural, aerodynamic, or electrical integrity must be clearly identified on product drawings. Acceptable methods include encircling the area, cross-hatching to indicate varying levels, or precise word descriptions. These zones demand uniformity and are subject to the most stringent defect allowances defined in Table 1.

📋 Defect Classification by Acceptance Level

The standard categorizes visual defects into three general acceptance levels (I, II, III) and a custom Level IV agreed upon by the purchaser and supplier. The following table summarizes the permissible limits for common surface defects in non-critical areas based on the standard’s general classification system.
