D2521 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

🛠️ Scope and Application

This specification covers an oxidized petroleum asphalt that, when applied in sufficient thickness over a suitable subgrade and covered with appropriate material, provides a waterproof membrane for canals, ditches, and pond linings. The standard emphasizes that values in SI units and inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard, and each system should be used independently to avoid nonconformance.

⚠️ Safety Note: This standard does not purport to address all safety concerns. It is the responsibility of the user to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

📊 Physical Requirements and Test Methods

The asphalt shall not foam when heated to 205 °C [400 °F] and shall conform to the requirements prescribed in Table 1 of the standard. The following test methods are used to evaluate the material properties:

🟦 Property 📏 Test Method
Softening Point Test Method D2398
Penetration Test Method D5/D5M
Ductility Test Method D113
Flash Point Test Method D92
Solubility in Trichloroethylene Test Method D2042
Loss on Heating Test Method D6/D6M

At the purchaser’s option, phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) may be specified as a catalyst or blowing aid in the preparation of the membrane asphalt.

💡 Key Requirement: Ensure the asphalt does not foam when heated to 205 °C [400 °F] to guarantee proper application and performance in lining systems.

⚙️ Sampling and Inspection

Sampling of the asphalt material shall be performed in accordance with Practice D140/D140M. The properties enumerated in this specification are determined using the test methods listed in the table above. Inspection of the material must be agreed upon between the purchaser and the seller as part of the purchase contract.

Failure to conform to any of the requirements prescribed constitutes grounds for rejection. In case of rejection, the seller has the right to reinspect the rejected material and resubmit the lot after removal of the packages not conforming to the requirements.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

🔍 What is the scope of ASTM D2521?

This specification covers an oxidized petroleum asphalt for use as a waterproof membrane in canal, ditch, and pond linings when applied over a suitable subgrade and covered with cover material.

💡 How is the asphalt sampled?

Sampling is conducted according to ASTM Practice D140/D140M to ensure representative samples for testing properties like penetration and ductility.

⚡ What are the key physical requirements?

The asphalt must not foam at 205°C and must meet specified requirements for softening point, penetration, ductility, flash point, solubility, and loss on heating as per the referenced test methods.

📌 What happens if the material fails inspection?

Nonconformance leads to rejection, but the seller may reinspect and resubmit after removing nonconforming packages as per Section 6.
