D2377-14 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

🛠️ Apparatus and Materials Specification

ASTM D2377 requires a specific set of tooling to ensure a uniform specimen and repeatable results. The table below outlines the critical dimensions for the apparatus as specified in Section 4 of the standard.

🟦 Component 📐 Description ⚡ Inch-Pound 📏 SI Equivalent
Brass Sheet Contact weight 3/4 × 1 1/2 in., ~1/4 in. thick 19 × 38 mm, ~6.4 mm thick
Template Steel or brass Inside: 1 × 3 3/4 in.
Outside: 2 × 4 3/4 in.
Thickness: 1/8 in.
Inside: 25.4 × 95.1 mm
Outside: 51 × 121 mm
Thickness: 3.2 mm
Steel Sheets Tin-plated substrate ~3 × 5 in. ~76 × 127 mm
Plastic Strips Clear LDPE film 1 × 5 in. × 0.004 ± 0.001 in. 25.4 × 127 mm × 0.1016 ± 0.0254 mm
Spatula Narrow blade 4 to 5 in. blade 102 to 127 mm
💡 Cleaning Requirement: Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Ethylene Dichloride, or a similar solvent must be used to thoroughly clean the template and steel sheets before specimen preparation to avoid contamination that could alter the tack-free time results.

🧪 Specimen Preparation and Standard Conditions

The sample must be conditioned in its original closed container for at least 5 hours at Standard Conditions as defined in Terminology C717. The sealant should be taken from a previously unopened container and thoroughly mixed prior to use.
