ASTM D2376-00 defines an accelerated laboratory test method for evaluating the resistance to sagging (slump) of face glazing and bedding compounds. These compounds are typically used in the installation of exterior steel, aluminum, and other metal sash systems. The test provides a rapid, standardized means of predicting how a compound will behave under elevated temperatures simulating solar exposure.
The test involves tooling a triangular bead of the conditioned compound into a standard steel channel. This assembly is then placed in a gravity convection oven strictly controlled at 122 ± 4°F (50 ± 2°C) for a period of 7 hours. After the thermal exposure, the sample is visually inspected for any deviation from its original geometric configuration.
Adherence to strict conditioning protocols and specific apparatus geometries is critical for achieving valid results under this standard.
First, thoroughly clean the steel channel using the specified solvent. Condition both the channel and the mixed compound (in a closed container) for a minimum of 5 hours at 73.4 ± 3.6°F (23 ± 2°C). Apply a triangular bead of the compound to the channel using a putty knife as illustrated in the standard. Place the filled channel into the oven with the flanges held perfectly horizontal and the bulk of the material oriented towards the top. Maintain the temperature for exactly 7 hours before removing the specimen for evaluation.
This test method utilizes a strict pass/fail criterion. According to Section 11 of the standard, the report must clearly indicate if any sagging or slumping occurred. Any sagging or slumping from the original triangular configuration, illustrated in Fig. 1(a) of the standard, is considered a failure. Users should also note that Section 12 explicitly states no statement is made regarding the precision or bias of this test method.

This standard specifically covers face glazing or bedding compounds, or both, designed for use on exterior steel, aluminum, and other metal sash systems.
Conditioning the channel and the closed container of compound at a standard temperature of 73.4 ± 3.6°F for at least 5 hours ensures thermal equilibrium and a standardized starting viscosity, which is crucial for repeatable slump measurements.
The criterion is absolute: any visual sagging or slumping of the compound bead from its original tooled triangular configuration after the 7-hour heating period is interpreted as a failure of the material.
The standard specifies a gravity convection oven with precise temperature control at 122 ± 4°F (50 ± 2°C). Gravity convection ensures gentle, uniform heating without forced airflow that could affect the compound surface.
