D2358-16 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

The ASTM D2358-16 (Reapproved 2024) standard specifies a test method for the separation and purification of active ingredients from surfactants and syndet compositions. The process isolates the active ingredient for qualitative examination and permits an estimation of the total active ingredient level.

Important Method Limitation: Because the procedure yields all alcohol-soluble materials, the standard explicitly states it is “useful only in estimating the actual active ingredient level” (Section 1.2). A separate determination of sodium chloride, the most common contaminant, is required to calculate a corrected total active ingredient level. Provision for purification of the active ingredients is detailed in Section 13.

📐 Requirement / Category 📏 Specification from Standard 🎯 Critical Notes
Primary SolventEthyl Alcohol (95%) — Formula 3A or 30Freshly boiled; must not be neutralized.
Water PurityDistilled or equal (Section 3.3)Applied throughout the method.
Reagent GradeACS Reagent Grade (Section 3.2.1)Must not lessen accuracy.
Measurement UnitsSI Units (Section 1.3)Regarded as the standard.

⚙️ Test Method Procedure and Limitations

Section 3 summarizes the core procedure. The active ingredient is extracted with the specified alcohol. A reprecipitation step is mandated to remove the last traces of insolubles. The resulting alcoholic extract is diluted to a known volume, and a suitable aliquot is evaporated to measure the total alcohol-soluble matter. To correct this value for the actual active ingredient level, a separate estimation of the sodium chloride content is performed and subtracted from the total alcohol-soluble matter.

⚡ Important Technical Note: The standard is designed for surfactants and syndet compositions. The initial “total alcohol-soluble matter” is NOT the pure active ingredient level. Users must conduct the separate NaCl determination for a corrected value.
🔬 Safety Requirements: According to Section 1.4, it is the sole responsibility of the user to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices. Users must review all Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for reagents prior to handling.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

🔍 What is the main purpose of ASTM D2358?

The standard covers a test method for separating and purifying active ingredients from surfactants and syndet compositions. It is primarily used for obtaining a sample for qualitative examinations, and it permits an estimation of the total active ingredient level after correction for contaminants.

💡 Why is a separate determination for sodium chloride required?

Because the test method yields the active ingredient together with all other alcohol-soluble materials. As sodium chloride is the most common contaminant in these compositions, its level must be measured separately to correct the total alcohol-soluble matter.
