This specification covers electrical insulating tape consisting of a flexible backing made from vinyl chloride plastic coated on one side with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. The tape is classified into two types based on nominal thickness:
The backing shall be polyvinyl chloride plastic, smooth and uniform, with straight and unbroken edges. The pressure-sensitive adhesive coating must be smooth, uniform, and free from lumps and bare spots, with no adhesive transfer when unwound. Black plastic backing is considered standard, but other colors or transparent options are acceptable when specified.
All testing shall be conducted in accordance with Test Methods D1000. The tape must meet the requirements specified in Table 1 of the standard for the respective type. Key requirements include:
The standard widths and lengths for rolls are selected from the following tables. Additional dimensions must be agreed upon between the purchaser and seller.

This specification covers two types: Type I with a nominal thickness of 0.18 mm (0.007 in.) and Type II with a nominal thickness of 0.25 mm (0.010 in.), both for general-purpose electrical insulating use.
Testing is conducted in accordance with ASTM D1000, which covers test methods for pressure-sensitive adhesive-coated tapes used for electrical and electronic applications.
Standard widths range from 6 mm (1/4 in.) to 50 mm (2 in.), including sizes such as 12 mm (1/2 in.), 19 mm (3/4 in.), and 25 mm (1 in.). Wider widths are available by agreement between the purchaser and seller.
The tape is classified based on nominal thickness into Type I and Type II, as defined in Section 4 of the standard. Both types are for general-purpose applications.
