D2284-11 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

🧪 Scope, Significance, and Summary of the Test

ASTM D2284-11 (Reapproved 2019) establishes a standardized procedure for determining the concentration of acidic fluorides in sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆). This test is vital for assessing gas quality in high-voltage electrical insulation systems where SF₆ is the primary dielectric medium. All values in the standard are stated in SI units.

The presence of acidic fluorides in SF₆ is highly undesirable. According to the standard’s section on Significance and Use, “Acidic fluorides are undesirable in SF6 used as an electrical insulating gas in that they may contribute to corrosion or constitute dielectric hazard.” The test method is applicable
