ASTM D2271-94 (Reapproved 1999) provides a standardized constant volume high-pressure vane pump test procedure for the preliminary examination of hydraulic fluid wear characteristics. This test is an essential indicator of how well a fluid can prevent wear in critical hydraulic components, specifically vane pumps. By circulating the hydraulic fluid through a rigorous 1000-hour cycle at tightly controlled speeds and pressures, the test method delivers quantitative performance data in the form of total cam ring and vane weight loss. As stated in the scope, the values in metric or other units are regarded separately as standard. This method serves as a benchmark for qualifying both petroleum and non-petroleum hydraulic fluids before deployment in demanding systems.
The test system design is similar to the apparatus referenced in Test Method D 2882. It requires a power system with a minimum capacity of 11 kW (15 hp). The core of the apparatus is a rotary vane pump utilizing a replacement cartridge type (Vickers 104 or 105°C), rated for 28.4 L/min (7.5 gal/min) flow at 1200 r/min and 6.89 MPa. The standard strictly prohibits any modification to the pump housing, such as plugging the drain hole or drilling and tapping an external drain.
The reservoir must be equipped with a removable 60-mesh stainless steel finger screen. A tight-fitting lid and a 6 mm vent are recommended, though acrylic lids should be avoided with non-petroleum fluids due to compatibility issues. The fluid volume in the system must be minimized to ensure a consistent recirculation time.
| 🟦 Parameter | 📏 Specification / Operating Value |
|---|---|
| Test Duration | 1000 hours |
| Pump Speed | 1200 ± 60 r/min |
| Pump Outlet Pressure | 6.90 ± 0.14 MPa (1000 ± 20 psig) |
| Temperature (Water-containing / Low Vis. Fluids) | 66 ± 3°C (150 ± 5°F) |
| Temperature (Other Synthetic / Petroleum Fluids) | 79°C (175°F) |
| Recirculation Time (T = V / P) | 1.0 to 1.5 minutes |
The result of the test is the total weight loss of the cam ring and vanes over the 1000-hour duration. This wear measurement is a direct reflection of the fluid’s anti-wear properties. The test method dictates that the fluid volume (V) relative to the pump delivery (P) must be adjusted so the complete fluid-cycle recirculation time (T) is strictly between 1 and 1.5 minutes. The total system volume shall not be limited, but shall be kept as small as practical to achieve this cycling rate.
