D224-89 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Classification and Types

This standard specifies four types of smooth-surfaced asphalt roll roofing based on minimum net mass per unit area. The roofing is manufactured from organic felt saturated with asphalt and coated on both sides with an asphaltic compound, which may contain mineral stabilizer, and surfaced with fine mineral matter to prevent sticking. The felt must be primarily organic fibers with a uniformly smooth surface, free from lumps and foreign substances.

🟦 Type 📏 Net Mass per Unit Area (lb/100 ft²) 📐 Net Mass per Unit Area (g/m²)
Type I 39.8 1943
Type II 54.6 2666
Type III 51.1 2495
Type IV 39.8 1943

Each type provides specific performance characteristics for different roofing applications.

⚙️ Physical Requirements and Testing

The roofing must meet key physical requirements to ensure durability. Pliability is tested at 77°F (25°C) where at least eight out of ten strips must not crack when tested per Section 16 of ASTM D 228. Behavior on heating at 176°F (80°C) for 2 hours requires volatile loss not exceeding 1.5% and no flowing, sagging, blistering, or absorption of the asphalt coating per Section 18 of ASTM D 228. Additionally, the product shall not crack when unrolled above 50°F (10°C) and shall not stick below 140°F (60°C) to cause tearing or material damage.

🎯 Property ⚡ Requirement
Pliability at 77°F (25°C) At least 8 out of 10 strips shall not crack per Section 16 of ASTM D 228.
Behavior on Heating to 176°F (80°C) for 2 h Volatile loss ≤ 1.5%; no flowing, sagging, blistering, or absorption per Section 18 of ASTM D
