D2203-01 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

🧪 Scope, Significance, and Terminology

The ASTM D2203-01 (Reapproved 2023) standard outlines a laboratory procedure for determining whether a sealant causes staining of porous substrates such as masonry, concrete, and stone (marble, limestone, sandstone, granite). Staining in a building is an aesthetically undesirable occurrence, and this test method specifically evaluates the likelihood of early staining caused by gross exudation from the sealant. Values in SI units are regarded as the standard.

Key terminology (compound, sealant, substrate) is defined in accordance with ASTM C717. This test method was originally approved in 1963 and last reapproved in 2023. It was developed in accordance with internationally recognized standardization principles.

Note: There is currently no ISO standard similar to this test method. For a broader evaluation of staining and color change, see ASTM Test Method C510.
