ASTM D2144-07 (Reapproved 2021) defines standard practices for examining electrical insulating oils via infrared absorption. The practices focus on recording and interpreting spectra from 4000 cm⁻¹ to 400 cm⁻¹ (2.5 µm to 25 µm). These are used for rapid continuity testing to identify oil shipments, detect contamination, and identify oils in service or storage. The standard emphasizes that infrared absorption’s high resolving power requires sufficient data accumulation to establish shipment-to-shipment variation before drawing conclusions.
The values stated in SI units are regarded as standard. Referenced documents include Practices D923, E131, E168, and E932 for equipment and terminology specifications.
Two practices are covered: the Reference Standard Practice and the Differential Practice. In the Reference Standard Practice, a cell filled with the test specimen is placed in the sample beam, and the absorption spectrum is recorded over the full instrument range. This spectrum is compared with a reference spectrum from a previous shipment or qualification oil. The Differential Practice uses two cells of identical path length—one with the test specimen and one with a reference oil—to directly compare absorption bands. Differences in frequency and intensity are observed and measured.
Equipment may include ratio recording or optical null double-beam dispersive spectrophotometers, as well as single-beam, HATR, or FTIR instruments, provided they comply with Practice E932. Appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices must be followed per user responsibility.

It is used for rapid continuity testing, contamination detection, and identification of electrical insulating oils by comparing infrared absorption spectra between 4000 cm⁻¹ and 400 cm⁻¹.
Ratio recording or optical null double-beam dispersive spectrophotometers, as well as single-beam, HATR, and FTIR instruments, are acceptable if they comply with Practice E932 specifications.
The Reference Standard Practice, which compares test oil spectra with a reference, and the Differential Practice, which uses two matched cells for direct comparison of absorption bands between test and reference oils.
Due to the high resolving power of infrared absorption, sufficient data must be accumulated to establish baseline shipment-to-shipment variation and avoid erroneous conclusions regarding oil quality.
