D2094-00 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Specimen Geometry and Types

ASTM D2094-00 specifies three types of adherend geometries for butt-joined adhesion tests: the bar specimen (Fig. 1), the rod specimen (Fig. 2), and the modified bar specimen (Fig. 3). The bar specimen is exclusively used for cleavage strength tests. The rod specimen and modified bar specimen are used for torsional shear tests. In tensile tests with dissimilar adherends, a modification using a sheet insert between the ends is permissible.

🟦 Specimen Type 📏 Application
Bar (Fig. 1) Cleavage strength tests
Rod (Fig. 2) Torsional shear tests
Modified Bar (Fig. 3) Torsional shear tests

⚙️ Machining and Surface Preparation

Adherends must be machined with precision. Metal adherends are machined from bar or rod stock with the bonding surface finished to a roughness of 1 µm. Plastic adherends are machined from laminated flat panels using a diamond charged wheel for rough machining and a carbide-tipped tool for finish machining; all machining is performed dry. Surface preparation should follow Practice D2093 for plastics and Guide D2651 for metals.

📊 Significance and Test Methods

This practice standardizes the preparation of test specimens to ensure reproducibility in adhesion testing. The specimens are intended for use with Test Method D2095 to determine tensile strength properties. Due to procedural flexibility, it is important to anticipate the type of properties being evaluated.

💡 Tip: Always clean and prepare surfaces per D2093 (plastics) or D2651 (metals) to maximize bond reliability.
⚠️ Important: When using the modification for dissimilar adherends, document insert materials and dimensions for valid comparison.
