D2074-07 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Scope and Definitions

These test methods, designated D2074-07 (Reapproved 2019), cover the indicator procedure for determining the total, primary, secondary, and tertiary amine values of fatty amines. They are not applicable to fatty amidoamines and fatty diamines. The values are expressed in terms of the number of milligrams of potassium hydroxide (KOH) equivalent to the amine basicity per gram of sample.

🟦 Property 📏 Definition 🎯 Unit
Total Amine Value Equivalent to total basicity in 1 g of sample mg KOH/g
Primary Amine Value Equivalent to primary amine basicity mg KOH/g
Secondary Amine Value Equivalent to secondary amine basicity mg KOH/g
Tertiary Amine Value Equivalent to tertiary amine basicity mg KOH/g

⚠️ Important Note: These test methods apply only to fatty amines and not to fatty amidoamines or fatty diamines. Ensure sample compatibility before testing.

⚗️ Reagents and Apparatus

Reagent grade chemicals and water conforming to Type II of Specification D1193 must be used. The standard specifies the following key reagents and apparatus:

🧪 Reagent 📐 Preparation ⚡ Use
Bromphenol Blue Indicator 0.2 g in 100 mL methanol, ethanol, or isopropanol Indicator for total amine titration
Bromcresol Green Indicator 0.1 g of sodium salt in 100 mL water Indicator for secondary amine titration
Hydrochloric Acid (0.1 N) 17 mL conc. HCl (sp gr 1.19) diluted to 1000 mL Standard titrant
Chloroform Solvent for sample

Apparatus required: 250-mL wide-mouth, alkali-resistant, borosilicate-glass Erlenmeyer flasks and a magnetic stirrer with an inert plastic-coated stirring bar.

⚙️ Test Procedure Overview

The total amine value is determined by direct titration with 0.1 N HCl using bromphenol blue indicator. Primary amine value is determined by reaction with salicylaldehyde followed by titration. Secondary amine value is determined after masking primary amines with acetylacetone. Tertiary amine value is calculated by difference or determined directly after acetylation of primary and secondary amines.

💡 Technical Tip: For accurate results, standardize the 0.1 N HCl solution regularly. Use freshly prepared indicators to avoid degradation.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

🔍 What is the scope of ASTM D2074-07?

It covers the indicator method for determining amine values of fatty amines, excluding fatty amidoamines and fatty diamines.

💡 What apparatus is specified?

250-mL Erlenmeyer flasks (alkali-resistant, borosilicate glass) and a magnetic stirrer with a plastic-coated stirring bar.

⚡ What are the key reagents?

Bromphenol blue, bromcresol green, chloroform, and 0.1 N hydrochloric acid. Reagent water Type II is required.

📌 Are there any safety precautions?

Users must establish appropriate safety practices as the standard does not cover all safety concerns.
