D204-02 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Scope and Test Fundamentals

ASTM D204‑02 (Reapproved 2021) provides standard test methods for evaluating the physical properties of sewing threads made from any fiber type. These test methods are specifically intended for threads taken directly from thread holders (e.g., cones, spools, bobbins) rather than from fabricated seams or fabrics.

⚡ Scope Limitation: This standard exclusively addresses physical property measurement. It does not define performance requirements or address safety concerns inherent in end‑use conditions. Users must establish their own safety, health, and environmental practices per Section 1.5.

The standard explicitly notes that values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. Values provided in parentheses (e.g., inches, pounds‑force) are for informational purposes only and are not considered standard (Section 1.4).

A comprehensive list of referenced documents is provided in Section 2, linking to related standards such as D123 (Terminology), D1776/D1776M (Conditioning and Testing Textiles), and D2258/D2258M (Sampling Yarn for Testing).

⚙️ Test Procedures and Measured Properties

Samples must be conditioned according to D1776/D1776M prior to testing. The standard organizes testing into distinct sections covering dimensional, tensile, and stability properties of the sewing thread.

Strength and Elongation (Sections 15 – 21): Conducted per D2256/D2256M, testing includes Single Strand in the Conditioned (19.1.1) and Wet (19.1.2) states, as well as Loop Strength (19.2) and Knot Strength (19.3).

Twist and Balance (Sections 22 – 33): Twist is measured via D1422/D1422M (Untwist‑Retwist) for spun yarns or D1423/D1423M (Direct Counting) for filament yarns. Twist balance (Sections 28‑33) assesses the tendency of the thread to snarl or kink.

Shrinkage (Sections 51 – 61): Single‑strand shrinkage is evaluated under two key conditions: Dry Heat (Section 58.1) and Boiling Water (Section 58.2).
