D20-20 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

🧪 Overview and Purpose of the Distillation Test

ASTM D20-20 is a standard test method for the distillation of road tars, providing a fundamental characterization of the material’s volatile components and non-volatile residue. The procedure is essential for evaluating tar quality in road and paving applications. The values stated in SI units are regarded as the standard.

The test involves distilling a 100-gram sample from a 300-mL side-arm flask at a controlled rate. Distillate fractions are collected in tared receivers at a series of specified temperatures, and the mass of the residue at the maximum temperature is determined. If desired, the residue and distillates may be used for further testing. The distillation test fundamentally separates tar into fractions according to a series of specified temperatures.
