D1976-20 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

ASTM D1976-20 is a standard test method under the direct jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D19 on Water. It specifies the procedure for determining dissolved, total-recoverable, and total elements in a wide variety of water matrices using inductively-coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The standard is directly harmonized with USEPA Method 200.7.

📐 Scope and Applicability of D1976-20

This test method is applicable to the analysis of trace elements in drinking water, ground water, surface water, and domestic, commercial, or industrial wastewaters. The concentration ranges for the specific elements covered are outlined in Table 1 of the standard. It is the user’s responsibility to validate the test method for waters of untested matrices, as emphasized in Section 1.2. All values are stated in SI units, and users must establish appropriate safety and health practices prior to use, with specific hazard statements provided in Note 2 and Section 9.
