D1784-20 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📋 Scope and Classification System

ASTM D1784-20 covers rigid PVC, CPVC, and vinyl chloride copolymers (containing a minimum of 80% vinyl chloride) for general-purpose extruded or molded products, including fittings and both pressure and non-pressure piping applications. The compounding ingredients are permitted to consist of lubricants, stabilizers, non-poly(vinyl chloride) resin modifiers, pigments, and inorganic fillers, among others as needed to meet the classification requirements.

🟦 Category📏 Specification / Value
Material CompositionPVC, CPVC, or VC Copolymers (≥80% VC)
Intended FormsExtruded, Molded Shapes, Fittings, Piping
Standard UnitsSI Units (values in parentheses for information)
💡 Compounding Flexibility: The list of compounding ingredients in Section 1.1 is not exhaustive, and not every listed ingredient is required for a given compound. Recycled PVC content is also permitted if it meets the classification criteria and the applicable product standard.

📐 Key Technical Considerations

This classification system standard is intended for the quality control of compounds using standard test specimens rather than finished products. For pressure piping applications, long-term material stress ratings such as the Hydrostatic Design Basis (HDB) in accordance with Test Method D2837 must be addressed separately. The standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S. Department of Defense.
