D1766-05 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📜 Scope and Significance

The ASTM D1766-05 (Reapproved 2021) standard provides a practical test method for determining the solubility of commercial chemicals used in rubber products. This method is specifically designed as a raw material quality-control tool (Section 4.1) and is not a rigorous determination of thermodynamic solubility. It measures the total solubility of all components in the proportions present under the test conditions.

⚠️ Application Limitation: This test method explicitly does not measure the solubility of a rubber chemical in rubber (Section 1.4). It assesses solubility in specific organic solvents under controlled laboratory conditions. Users must establish appropriate safety practices before use (Section 1.6).

⚙️ Test Procedure and Conditions

The procedure involves preparing a saturated solution by shaking the test specimen in a specified volume of solvent, followed by a settling period. A clear aliquot of the supernatant solution is then evaporated to determine the mass of dissolved solids (Section 3.1).

Required Apparatus

🟦 Apparatus 📏 Specification
Container 100 cm³ (4-oz) glass bottle with screw cap and metal foil liner
Weighing Bottle 50 cm³, ground-glass, low-form with cover
Oven Constant-temperature, Type B per E145, 110°C max

Procedure Steps

📐 Step 🎯 Action ⚡ Condition
1 Place 50 cm³ of solvent in a container. Add test specimen to saturation plus 25% excess. Shake mechanically for a minimum of 4 h at room temperature.
2 Hold the mixture and shake occasionally. Minimum of 4 h at 23 ± 0.5 °C.
3 Allow solids to settle. Remove 25 cm³ aliquots
