D1765-23 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Scope and General Classification Basis

ASTM D1765-23, under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee D24.41, defines the standard classification system for rubber-grade carbon blacks using a four-character nomenclature. As outlined in Section 1.1, the first character indicates the influence on cure rate, the second character provides information on average surface area, and the last two characters are assigned arbitrarily. Per Section 1.5, this international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization. All currently assigned rubber-grade carbon black numbers are listed in Table 1 together with some of their typical properties. Section 1.2 clarifies that ASTM classification numbers not listed in Table 1 have either been withdrawn or are not currently assigned, and their use is strictly prohibited.

The standard specifies that values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard (Section 1.3). While it does not purport to address all safety concerns, it places the responsibility on the user to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices (Section 1.4).

🏷️ Interpreting the Four-Character Nomenclature

The system provides a functional description of the carbon black based on its cure rate and particle grouping. The designation consists of a letter followed by three additional characters.

  • First Character (Letter): Per Section 3.1, “N” indicates a normal curing rate typical of standard furnace blacks. “S” indicates a slow curing rate for channel blacks or modified furnace blacks. Carbon blacks may vary considerably in “curing rate” within each letter classification.
  • Second Character (Digit 0–9): As defined in Section 3.2, this digit designates the average surface area group of the carbon black. Lower digits correspond to higher surface area groups.
  • Third and Fourth Characters: These are assigned arbitrarily by Subcommittee D24.41 per Section 1.1 to uniquely identify specific grades.
🟦 Position in Code 📏 Designation Type 🎯 Functional Meaning
1st Letter (N or S) Cure Rate: Normal or Slow (Section 3.1)
2nd Digit (0–9) Surface Area Group (Section 3.2)
3rd & 4th Arbitrary (Digit/Letter) Unique Grade Identification
✅ Application Insight: A high surface area grade for high reinforcement typically starts with a low second digit (e.g., N100 series). A low surface area, high-structure grade for loading or extrusion starts with a higher digit (e.g., N700 series). Always verify specific property limits in the latest Table 1 of the standard.

⚙️ Key Referenced Standard Test Methods

The typical properties listed in Table 1 are determined by several rigorously defined ASTM test methods referenced in Section 2. These methods ensure consistency in characterizing the carbon black’s physical and chemical properties for classification and quality control.
