ASTM D1763-00 (Reapproved 2021) covers totally reactive epoxy resins supplied as liquids or solids. These resins are designed for castings, coatings, tooling, potting, adhesives, and reinforced applications. Polymerization requires the addition of hardeners in proper proportions to form infusible products. The properties can be modified with fillers, plasticizers, thixotropic agents, and other additives. Values stated in SI units are regarded as standard. This specification is not a source of engineering data; routine inspection should focus on properties like viscosity, color, epoxy content, and softening point.
Resins are classified into five types by chemical nature: Type I (bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin), Type II (reaction product of phenol and formaldehyde novolac with epichlorohydrin), Type III (cycloaliphatic and peracid epoxies), Type IV (glycidyl esters), and Type V (reaction product of epichlorohydrin and p-aminophenol). These types cover a range of applications from general coatings to high-performance composites.
To ensure consistency, the standard references several ASTM test methods. Kinematic viscosity is measured per D445, color per D1209 or D1544, epoxy content per D1652, and softening point per D3104. Packaging is covered under Practice D3892.
| 🟦 Type | 📏 Chemical Basis | 🎯 Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| I | Bisphenol A + Epichlorohydrin | General-purpose castings and coatings |
| II | Novolac + Epichlorohydrin | High-temperature and chemical resistance |
| III | Cycloaliphatic Epoxies | Electrical insulation and outdoor durability |
| IV | Glycidyl Esters | Adhesives and sealants |
| V | p-Aminophenol + Epichlorohydrin | High-modulus composites |
