ASTM D1719-11 (Reapproved 2019) covers the specification for isobutyl alcohol (also known as 2-methyl-1-propanol and isobutanol). This specification is primarily intended for solvents used in paint, varnish, lacquer, and related coating products. The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The standard references several key ASTM test methods for evaluating properties such as distillation range (D1078), color (D1209, D5386), nonvolatile matter (D1353), water content (D1364), acidity (D1613), specific gravity (D4052), and general sampling procedures (E300, E29). Packaging must comply with U.S. Federal Specification PPP-C-2020.
Isobutyl alcohol intended for use in paints and coatings must conform strictly to the physical and chemical requirements listed in the table below.
| 🟦 Property | 📏 Specification Limit | 📐 Test Method |
|---|---|---|
| Apparent specific gravity 20/20 °C | 0.802 to 0.804 | D4052 |
| Apparent specific gravity 25/25 °C | 0.794 to 0.801 | D4052 |
| Color, Pt-Co Scale, max | 10 | D1209 / D5386 |
| Distillation Range | Entirely within 2 °C incl. 107.9 °C | D1078 |
| Nonvolatile Matter, max | 0.005 g/100 mL | D1353 |
| Water Content, max | 0.2 weight % | D1364 (Karl Fischer) |
| Acidity (as acetic acid), max | 0.003 weight % | D1613 |
To determine conformance with ASTM D1719, observed or calculated values must be rounded off “to the nearest unit” in the last right-hand digit used in expressing the specification limit, in accordance with the rounding-off method of Practice E29. Sampling of the chemical shall be conducted in accordance with Practice E300 and Guide D268.
This standard notes that isobutyl alcohol is also commonly known as 2-methyl-1-propanol and isobutanol.
The scope of this specification specifically covers isobutyl alcohol intended for use in paint, varnish, lacquer, and related products.
ASTM D1719 requires that isobutyl alcohol contain no more than 0.2 weight % water (tested per D1364) and no more than 0.003 weight % acidity (expressed as acetic acid, tested per D1613).
The standard requires that the sample distill entirely within a 2 °C range, and that this range must include 107.9 °C.
