D1710-15 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Scope and Material Specifications

ASTM D1710-15 (Reapproved 2021) is the standard specification for extruded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) rod, heavy-walled tubing, and basic shapes. This specification covers materials manufactured from the virgin PTFE resin defined in Specification D4894, as well as reprocessed PTFE resin as defined in Guide D7209. Developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization, this standard applies solely to materials with a wall thickness of 1.6 mm (1/16 in.) or greater.

It is critical to understand the relationship between this standard and D3294: materials certified to D3294 (compression molded) may be substituted for D1710, but materials certified to D1710 cannot be substituted for D3294. All values in this standard are stated in SI units in accordance with IEEE/ASTM SI 10, with inch-pound units provided for information only.

⚙️ Manufacturing Practices and Referenced Standards

Manufacturing under D1710-15 must strictly follow good commercial ram extrusion practices. The standard relies on a comprehensive set of referenced documents for defining material properties and establishing uniform testing procedures. Conditioning of all test specimens must be performed in accordance with Practice D618 prior to testing.
