D1546-96 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Specimen Materials and Preparation

ASTM D1546-96 specifies first-grade maple flooring panels measuring 2½ by 12 in. (65 by 300 mm) as the standard substrate for testing clear floor sealers. Alternative wood types and sizes may be used by agreement between purchaser and seller. Panels are sanded with No. 00 garnet paper until smooth, and dust is removed with a clean tack cloth. For the test, two panels receive a full coating of sealer, while three panels are coated on only half their surface to allow comparison with untreated wood. The sealer is applied liberally with a cheesecloth pad, allowed to set for 15 minutes for absorption, and then wiped clean with fresh cheesecloth. Panels are dried for 24 hours at 70–90°F (21–32°C) and 50 ± 10% relative humidity. A second coat is applied per the manufacturer’s instructions, followed by another 24-hour drying period before evaluation.
