ASTM D1330-04 (Reapproved 2022) is the controlling specification for gaskets cut from sheet rubber intended for general service in water, air, and low-pressure steam systems. The standard explicitly excludes applications involving oils and strong acids, limiting its scope to non-aggressive fluids. Values are stated in SI units as the primary standard. Compounds must be manufactured from natural rubber, reclaimed rubber, synthetic rubber, or mixtures thereof, combined with suitable compounding materials and vulcanized to a uniform quality and thickness. The finished sheet must feature a smooth or fine fabric surface and be available in red or black as specified. Workmanship must yield a product free from porous areas, air pockets, foreign matter, or any other defects affecting serviceability.
The specification categorizes gaskets into three distinct service grades. Grade I is required for contact with water and mandates low water absorption. Grade II is limited to air service. Grade III is designed for low-pressure steam applications. All materials must conform to the physical property requirements prescribed in Table 1.
| 🟦 Property | 📏 Grade I (Water) | 📐 Grade II (Air) | 🎯 Grade III (Steam) | ⚡ Test Method |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hardness (Durometer A / IRHD) | 70 ± 5 | 70 ± 5 | 70 ± 5 | D2240 / D1415 |
| Tensile Strength, min (MPa) | 6.9 | 4.8 | 6.9 | D412 |
| Elongation at Break, min (%) | 250 | 200 | 300 | D412 |
| Compression Set (22 h / 70 °C), max (%) | 40 | 50 | 35 | D395 |
| Change in Tensile (Oven Aging), max (%) | -20 | -20 | -20 | D573 / D865 |
| Water Absorption, max (mg/cm²) | 10 | — | — | D471 |
Testing must strictly follow the referenced ASTM standards to verify compliance. Tensile properties are evaluated in accordance with D412, compression set per D395,
