This specification, designated D1241-15, covers the quality and grading of materials used in the construction of subbase, base, and surface courses for pavements. Materials include sand-clay mixtures, gravel, stone or slag screenings, sand, and crusher-run coarse aggregate combined with soil mortar. The requirements in this standard, issued under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D18 on Soil and Rock, are intended for materials having normal specific gravity, absorption, and gradation characteristics.
ASTM D1241-15 specifies two primary mixture types. Type I mixtures consist of stone, gravel, or slag combined with natural or crushed sand and fine mineral particles passing a 75-µm (No. 200) sieve. These mixtures must conform to Gradation A, B, C, or D. Type II mixtures consist primarily of natural or crushed sand with fine mineral particles passing a 75-µm sieve, with or without stone, gravel, or slag, and must conform to Gradation E or F.
| 🟦 Mixture Type | 📏 Composition | 📐 Gradations |
|---|---|---|
| Type I | Stone, gravel, or slag with sand and fines | A, B, C, D |
| Type II | Natural or crushed sand with fines | E, F |
Coarse aggregate, defined as material retained on the 4.75-mm (No. 4) sieve, must consist of hard, durable, and sound particles or fragments. A critical requirement is that the coarse aggregate must exhibit resistance to degradation, with an abrasion loss of not more than 50 percent as determined by Test Method C131 (Los Angeles Abrasion). Sampling of aggregates must be conducted in accordance with Practice D75.
| 🟦 Requirement | 🎯 Specification Limit | ⚡ Standard Method |
|---|---|---|
| Particle Character | Hard, durable, sound fragments | Terminology D653 |
| Maximum Abrasion Loss | 50% | Test Method C131 |
Gradation requirements are enforced through standard sieve analysis (Test Method C136). The determination of material finer than the 75-µm (No. 200) sieve is performed by washing in accordance with Test Method C117. For evaluating the fine fraction, consistency limits (Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit, Plasticity Index) are determined using Test Methods D4318. The standard references Specification E11 for woven wire test sieve cloth and emphasizes Practice D3740 for the minimum requirements of agencies engaged in testing and inspection.
Type I, which consists of stone, gravel, or slag with sand and fines, and Type II, which consists of natural or crushed sand with fine mineral particles.
The maximum abrasion loss is 50 percent, determined using the Los Angeles Abrasion test (Test Method C131).
The standard uses the 4.75-mm (No. 4) sieve to separate coarse and fine aggregate, and the 75-µm (No. 200) sieve to define fine mineral particles.
This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S. Department of Defense.
