D1184-98 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

This test method, designated ASTM D1184-98 (Reapproved 2020), covers the determination of comparative flexural properties of metal or wood adhesive bonded assemblies. Using standard shape specimens and defined conditions of pretreatment, temperature, relative humidity, and testing technique, the method is designed to develop a large portion of shear forces between laminae under load. It is not applicable to assemblies with nonrigid adherends, and the data obtained are not intended for design work.

📐 Specimen Geometry and Testing Conditions

The test specimen in ASTM D1184-98 is a standard shape laminated assembly designed to induce shear forces between adherends during flexural loading. This contrasts with other ASTM flexural methods that minimize shear stress. The method applies to metal or wood assemblies under controlled pretreatment, temperature, and relative humidity. It excludes nonrigid materials.

⚠️ Warning: The flexural strength data from this test are for comparative evaluation only and must not be used for design work. Refer to the standard for complete scope details.

⚙️ Test Procedure and Variable Control

The accuracy of test results depends on the bonding conditions. Unless otherwise agreed, the adhesive manufacturer must provide numerical values for each variable: (1) surface preparation—including moisture content of wood, cleaning and drying of metal, and special treatments; (2) complete mixing directions; (3) application conditions—spread rate, film thickness, number of coats, and surface application; (4) assembly conditions—room temperature, time, and open or closed assembly; (5) curing conditions—pressure amount, time under pressure, and temperature at the glue line or atmosphere; and (6) conditioning before testing—time, temperature, and relative humidity. A range may be prescribed for any variable if acceptable to both parties.

🟦 Variable 📏 Requirement
Surface Preparation Moisture content of wood; cleaning and drying of metal; sanding or other treatments
Mixing Directions Complete mixing instructions for the adhesive
Application Conditions Rate of spread, film thickness, number of coats, surface application
Assembly Conditions Room temperature, open or closed assembly, time before pressure
Curing Conditions Pressure amount, time under pressure, temperature (glue line or atmosphere)
Conditioning Time, temperature, relative humidity before testing
✅ Note: A range of values may be prescribed for any variable if mutually agreed upon by the manufacturer and purchaser, ensuring flexibility in testing conditions.

📊 Key Measured Properties

The primary measured property is the comparative flexural strength of the adhesive bond under defined conditions. The testing technique is designed to develop a large portion of shear forces between the laminae, providing insight into bond performance. The results are comparative and not suitable for design calculations. The method is applicable only to rigid adherends.
