ASTM D1083–91 (Reapproved 1998) establishes standardized procedures for assessing the mechanical handling integrity of unitized loads and large shipping cases and crates. The test methods simulate real-world handling stresses from forklift, clamp truck, crane, and spade lift systems. Comprising nine distinct tests—drop, spade lift, clamp lift, push-pull, grabhook, sling, tip, tipover, and rolling—the standard aims to qualify container strength and ensure protection of the contents during distribution.
⚠️ Selection of Test Methods: As noted in Section 1.1, not all methods are applicable to every product, container, or load. The user is responsible for selecting the relevant methods based on the anticipated handling environment and the specific characteristics of the shipping unit.
The nine core test methods defined in the standard target distinct mechanical hazards. The table below organizes each method by its primary objective and the corresponding material handling system it evaluates.
