ASTM D1006/D1006M-21 establishes standardized procedures for exterior exposure testing of paints applied to wood and wood composite materials. This practice encompasses specimen selection, preparation, paint application, and evaluation of weathering performance.
The selection of wood substrates is governed by Practice D7787, which provides guidance on choosing appropriate wood and wood composite materials for weathering evaluations. Test specimens should represent intended use dimensions and surface conditions. Consistent preparation is essential to minimize variability in test results.
Exposure conditions must be carefully controlled and documented. The standard references Practices G7 and G147 for atmospheric testing and specimen conditioning. Specifics such as geographical location, panel orientation, exposure duration, and evaluation intervals should be agreed upon by all stakeholders. Proper application techniques are also critical to ensure the paint film is representative of hand or factory application.
After exposure, the paint film is evaluated using ASTM methods specific to degradation characteristics. These include measurement of gloss retention (D523), checking (D660), cracking (D661), blistering (D714), flaking (D772), color difference (D2244), and chalking (D4214). Film thickness can be assessed ultrasonically per D6132.
| 🟦 Standard | 📏 Property Measured | 🎯 Evaluation Method |
|---|---|---|
| D523 | Specular Gloss | Reflectance measurement |
| D660 | Degree of Checking | Visual assessment against standards |
| D661 | Degree of Cracking | Visual rating scales |
| D714 | Degree of Blistering | Size and frequency rating |
| D772 | Degree of Flaking | Area and severity assessment |
| D2244 | Color Difference | Instrumental color analysis |
| D4214 | Degree of Chalking | Adhesive tape method |
| D6132 | Dry Film Thickness | Ultrasonic gauge measurement |
