🔋 BS ISO 6469 is the British Standard implementing the ISO 6469 series, which specifies safety specifications for electrically propelled road vehicles. The series covers the on-board rechargeable energy storage system (RESS), vehicle operational safety means and failure protection, and protection of persons against electric shock — an important basis for the design, testing and type approval of battery-electric and hybrid vehicles with high-voltage electrical systems.
The BS ISO 6469 series applies to the safety specification of electrically propelled road vehicles (including battery-electric and hybrid) and specifies, by part:
The three parts together form the safety evaluation system for electric vehicles.
The series comprises four documents; the core readable parts are ISO 6469-1, 2 and 3, while Part 4 is a scanned version summarised here from public domain knowledge.
| Standard | Title | Main Content | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| BS ISO 6469-1:2009 | On-board rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) | RESS arrangement, safety requirements, vibration/temperature tests | Readable |
| BS ISO 6469-2:2009 | Vehicle operational safety means and protection against failures | Driving, parking, insulation-monitoring safety requirements | Readable |
| BS ISO 6469-3:2011 | Protection of persons against electric shock | Insulation resistance, isolation, IP, potential equalisation and tests | Readable |
| BS ISO 6469-4:2015 | (Related safety requirement, scanned) | Summarised from public domain knowledge | Scan |
ISO 6469-1 specifies the arrangement and safety requirements of the RESS in the vehicle, including safety under mechanical shock, vibration, temperature extremes, overcharge/over-discharge and external short circuit, plus the monitoring and protection functions of the battery management system (BMS), so the storage system does not present thermal-runaway or other hazards under various conditions.
ISO 6469-2 specifies vehicle operational safety means: preventing unintended vehicle movement, preventing danger from high-voltage system failure, insulation-resistance monitoring and fault indication, so that the vehicle enters a safe state on failure and occupants and maintenance personnel are protected.
ISO 6469-3 specifies requirements to protect persons against electric shock: insulation resistance between high-voltage parts and accessible conductive parts, protection of live parts (IP rating), potential equalisation and isolation, with corresponding test methods (e.g. insulation-resistance measurement, touch-current measurement).
In a collision, immersion or insulation fault, rescue and maintenance personnel should first safely isolate the high-voltage circuit and confirm energy release to prevent electric shock and battery thermal runaway. The vehicle emergency manual should identify high-voltage component locations, isolation switches and energy-release procedures, and OEMs should train and drill rescue teams. Battery modules should feature safe pressure relief and insulation monitoring with early alarm. For scrapping and dismantling, discharge and disassemble per specified procedures to prevent incidents from residual energy, protecting personnel and the environment.
