🚢 BS EN ISO 15181 is the standard series for determining the release rate of biocides from antifouling paints in the field of paints and varnishes. Antifouling paints inhibit marine-organism attachment by slowly releasing biocides from immersed surfaces such as ship hulls. The release rate directly determines antifouling effectiveness, coating life and environmental impact: too low a rate allows fouling, increasing hull resistance; too high a rate pollutes the marine environment and shortens coating life. Adopted from ISO 15181 through CEN as EN ISO 15181 and implemented in the UK as British Standards (partly linked to the BS 3900 series), the series provides harmonised, comparable release-rate measurement methods for antifouling formulation design, product certification and environmental regulation.
Biocide release-rate measurement involves complex extraction, analytical chemistry and conversion processes. The series uses a “general method + dedicated methods for each active substance” structure: Part 1 specifies the general method for extracting biocides from antifouling paints; Part 2 specifies determination of copper-ion release rate; Part 3 specifies calculation of zineb release rate; Parts 4–6 address specific active substances (e.g., PTPB, and others) and general methodology. The series uses a unified measure — release per unit area per unit time (µg/cm²·day) — making different formulations and environmental assessments comparable.
| Standard | Part Subject | Main Measurement/Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| BS EN ISO 15181-1 | General method for extraction of biocides | Standard-seawater leaching, sampling and extraction procedures |
| BS EN ISO 15181-2 | Determination of copper-ion release rate | AAS/spectrophotometry of copper ion in leachate |
| BS EN ISO 15181-3 | Calculation of the zinc ethylene-bis-dithiocarbamate (zineb) release rate | Stoichiometric conversion from measured component to zineb |
| BS EN ISO 15181-4 | Determination of pyridine-triphenylborane (PTPB) release rate | Extraction and instrumental analysis of a specific active (per domain knowledge) |
| BS EN ISO 15181-5 | Determination of other active-substance release rates | Separate measurement of multiple actives (per domain knowledge) |
| BS EN ISO 15181-6 | General biocide release-rate measurement | Integrated general method and data processing (per domain knowledge) |
Part 1 specifies leaching in standard seawater (or artificial seawater) at a constant temperature (typically about 25 °C) with defined agitation/flow, with periodic seawater replacement and leachate sampling. Leaching duration, replacement frequency and coated area must be tightly controlled so the measured release rate is representative and repeatable.
Part 2 quantifies copper-ion concentration in the leachate by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) or spectrophotometry, yielding the copper-ion release rate. Part 3 measures a component related to zineb and converts it by stoichiometry to the zineb release rate. For formulations with multiple active substances, Parts 4–6 give dedicated methods and data-processing requirements to avoid mutual interference.
