IEC 60141: Oil-Filled Cable Testing — The Precision Hydraulic Member of the HV Cable Family

Oil-Filled Cable Testing — The “Hydraulic” Member of the HV Cable Family

IEC 60141-1 specifies oil-filled and gas-pressure cable test methods. Oil-filled cables rely on oil pressure (typically 0.3–0.5 MPa) to maintain paper insulation impregnation — once pressure is lost, dielectric strength collapses rapidly and breakdown follows.

Key tests: (1) Oil-pressure integrity — cable held at 1.5× working pressure for 24 hours; pressure drop ≤0.02 MPa. (2) Dielectric dissipation factor — oil-filled cable tan δ is sensitive to temperature and pressure changes; a sudden increase typically indicates oil blockage or local oil starvation. (3) Oil DGA (Dissolved Gas Analysis) — same principle as transformer oil DGA; acetylene (C₂H₂) indicates internal arcing and mandates immediate shutdown.

TN Lab — Oil-filled cables are precision devices in the HV cable family. Oil pressure and oil condition are their two lifelines.
