IEC 60130: Low-Frequency Connectors — The Standardization Heritage Behind USB and HDMI

Low-Frequency Connectors: USB, HDMI, and Audio Jacks All Trace Back to This Standard System

IEC 60130-4A specifies connectors for frequencies below 3 MHz. This standard system gave rise to countless consumer electronics connectors — while USB, HDMI, RJ45, and RCA audio each have their own dedicated standards, their contact resistance, insulation resistance, and mating durability test methods all trace back to IEC 60130.

Core performance parameters: (1) Contact resistance — pin-to-socket typically ≤10 mΩ (signal), ≤5 mΩ (power). Contact resistance increases with mating cycles — oxidation and wear are the primary degradation mechanisms. (2) Insulation resistance — ≥1,000 MΩ between adjacent contacts, ensuring acceptable crosstalk. (3) Mating durability — USB ≥1,500 cycles, industrial ≥500 cycles, aerospace (MIL-DTL-38999) ≥500 cycles but under far harsher environments.
