IEC 60122-3:2010 specifies quartz crystal unit requirements. Every digital circuit clock signal, every CPU clock, every electronic watch timekeeping — depends on a tiny quartz crystal.
Key parameters: (1) Frequency tolerance (typically ±10–±100 ppm at 25 °C) — ±100 ppm drifts 8.6 seconds per day. (2) Frequency-temperature stability — AT-cut crystals achieve ±10–±30 ppm over -20 to +70 °C. (3) Load capacitance (CL) — the crystal nominal frequency is calibrated at a specific load capacitance (typically 12–20 pF). PCB trace stray capacitance (2–5 pF) must be included in the calculation; otherwise, frequency deviation far exceeds tolerance. (4) Drive level — excessive excitation power damages the crystal (accelerated ageing, fracture), typically limited to 10–100 μW.
