IEC 60189-3:2007 specifies PVC-insulated low-frequency cables and wires. The headphone cables, USB power wires, and audio interconnects you handle daily — their insulation and conductor specifications reference this standard.

Core content: Conductor coating (tinned copper vs. bare — tin prevents oxidation but increases contact resistance), insulation color coding (Brown-Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue-Violet-Grey-White-Black sequence for multi-core identification), and voltage withstand (1,500 V AC or 2,250 V DC for 1 minute between cores and between core and shield).

Flexibility classes: Fixed wiring (solid conductor, 4×D bend radius), ordinary flexible (stranded, 6×D), high-flex (robotics/drag-chain, up to 10×D, tested to hundreds of thousands of bend cycles).
